With origins in Stockholm, Sweden, Svensk Standard began life in 2008 as a stimulus and departure point for architectural production. Those working under the Svensk Standard banner are invited to collaborate and contribute in an on-demand, as-you-please, project-by-project fashion. People come and go as sites, outputs and modes of enquiry shift accordingly. Svensk Standard is, at its simplest, a doing of architecture by people who like to do. The primary object and site of our practice is the architectural process, with a focus on ways of doing rather than the celebration of outputs. We seek out spaces that can act as a stage — spaces that offer up audiences, that imply a general public agenda and that demand relentless production. Svensk Standard trades on the ideas and opinions of those we encounter within our projects and, in turn, hope to encourage delight, surprise and play through our work. Through projects based in Sweden, China, Australia and Italy, Svensk Standard has undertaken work that has explored and questioned the accepted rules of “the monument”, “the office”, “myth”, and “the foreign architect”. At the 2010 Architecture Biennale in Venice, we opened these lines of enquiry to include the concept of “archaeology”.
